Writing Assignments: Usually, essays ask you to evaluate and respond to one (or more) of the reading assignments. But our writing assignments will try to do more than simply repeat an author's ideas or express why we liked or disliked a particular piece. To the contrary, we will use the writing assignments to learn to summarize and to paraphrase an author's work. We will learn to evaluate how authors construct their work; we will learn to recognize the strengths and weaknesses in that work; we will learn to be critical, analytical, and fair in assessing their work.
