Intro to 232

This course is analytical writing. We will look into the ways in which writers construct and present their ideas with writing. Mostly, we will be looking into argumentative writing.

Argumentative writing shares a certain faculty of mind with analytical reading, reading that allows us to look beyond main ideas and major supporting details (the kind of reading we do when we read for content). Analytical reading encourages us to interpret as we read and to evaluate the quality of the ideas we are learning. Analytical reading allows us to think critically of both the author's ideas and the way that they presents them to us, the audience.


There are different kinds of writing in composing an analytical piece. If you are concentrating on capturing the essence of the author's ideas, you write to summarize. If you want to interpret what an author has written, you respond by analyzing. If you want to evaluate the quality of information, you critique an author's work.

Writing Assignments: Usually,essays ask you to evaluate and respond to one (or more) of the reading assignments. But our writing assignments will try to do more than simply repeat an author's ideas or express why we liked or disliked a particular piece. To the contrary, we will use the writing assignments to learn to summarize and to paraphrase an author's work. We will learn to evaluate how authors construct their work; we will learn to recognize the strengths and weaknesses in that work; we will learn to be critical, analytical, and fair in assessing their work.

Assignments:

Failure to hand in assignments on time will risk teetering on not passing this course this semester. Late work may be considered if you communicate with me before hand and ask for an extension.

Course Description:
Primer semestre: Repaso de la gramática y la práctica de redacción para desarrollar un estilo claro y preciso. Énfasis en la estructura de la oración y en la composición. Prerrequisito: Permiso del departamento. Segundo semestre: Técnicas de investigación y lectura analítica de materiales escogidos. Prerrequisito: HUEN 231. Equivalente a “Freshman Composition” del primer año de colegio en los Estados Unidos.



So Composition 2 will focus on academic, researched writing, with special attention toward analysis and argumentation.
In our class, we will read and discuss Orwell's 1984 (the subject of our research paper), take three short tests on the novel, propose a research topic related to the novel, write ten abstracts after finding appropriate sources, study academic argumentation and analysis,write one paper related to 1984, and take a final exam on the course content. We will also work on editing and usage problems in written English as needed.

Course Materials: My classes need only my freely accessible HyperTextBooks, and a copy of George Orwell's 1984. The complete novel is available online from a number of sources. I will have one for you on ECAMS under hyperlinks.
